Professional basketball players love tattoos. Just ask Scott Martin, who recently relocated from Florida to Hawaii and opened a new studio, Scratch the Surface Ink, on Oahu’s North Shore.
Martin discovered a passion for tattooing when he was 15 years old and has been honing his skills ever since. After studying graphic design and airbrush technique at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, he held down day jobs while working as a tattoo artist and musician at night in Pennsylvania and the Washington D.C. area. He quickly gained a reputation for his vivid designs and exceptional attention to detail. Then he moved to Orlando, Florida, where he owned and operated two upscale tattoo shops in the Central Florida tourist district.
“People like to celebrate important moments in their lives by getting tattoos – a personal victory, the birth of a child, a significant milestone, a new beginning,” says Martin. “Athletes are no exception. I have been flown around the country to do private sessions, and sometimes an entire team will hire me to do tattoos at a party or event.”
Among the stars wearing Martin’s art are Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Memphis Grizzlies), DeShawn Stevenson (Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks), LeToya Luckett, Andray Blatche (Washington Wizards), Dominic McGuire (Washington Wizards, Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Bobcats, Golden State Warriors), JaVale McGee (Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets), Darius Songaila (Washington Wizards, New Orleans Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers), Marcus Jordan (son of Michael Jordan), Jose Diaz (Texas Rangers), Dermontti Dawson (Pittsburgh Steelers), Jason Terry (Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics), Laura Govan (Basketball Wives), The Caron Butler family, and The Antawn Jamison family.
Martin’s artistic talent and his willingness to do whatever it takes to make a tattoo perfect set him apart from other tattoo artists. Scott describes himself as “always an innovator, never an imitator. I take my time with every piece, which is why I almost never have to do touch-ups.”
